Chinese Hackers Target Human Rights Groups with Persistent Cyberattacks

Human rights groups are not only vulnerable to cyber attacks, but are constantly targeted, particularly by Chinese hackers. All ten human rights groups studied by the Citizen’s Lab had been breached within the four year period spanning from 2010 to 2014, according to a new report released Tuesday by the group.

The Citizen’s Lab studied eight Chinese and two international organizations from 2010 to 2014, and found that they received 2,814 malicious payloads, and malware from 44 families, as well as one zero day and other attacks.

The report found that the attacks are persistent and adapt to "maintain access over time and across platforms," and that the attacks are more socially than technologically sophisticated. The attacks disrupt communications, drain resources, and even endanger the personal safety of group members.

According to the CBC, the proliferation of malware through email sent to the groups has inspired the adoption of a Buddhist slogan for activists: "Detach from attachments."

can lead you to all sort of trouble and we Buddhists believe that non attachment alone can lead you to happiness, monk Jamyang Palden told The Associated Press, expressing a philosophical belief before extending it to internet security. have to learn to be suspicious of email attachments.

The report traces many attacks to China, and connects them to numerous major attacks on multinational corporations, non governmental organizations, and governments. Unfortunately for rights groups, they have far less resources for preventing, identifying, and mitigating such attacks.

no doubt about it. This is something that is, if not carefully orchestrated by the government of China, is certainly tolerated by them and they benefit from it, Citizen Lab director Ron Deibert told Reuters.

Diebert also implicated China’s notorious Unit 61398 in one of the rights group’s breaches.

GREATFIRE also reported on the censorship of Google ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in June.

Private data unrelated to China has also been targeted recently by Chinese hackers, who stole millions of patient records from a US company over the summer.
